November 25th was International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The date marks the brutal assassination in 1960 of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists, in the Dominican Republic.
November 25th also marks the commencement of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence global campaign. Ending on December 10th, Human Rights Day, this movement provides individuals and groups a chance to mobilize and call attention to the urgent need to end violence against women and girls.
This year, UN Women in partnership with the UN’s Secretary General, have launched the “Orange the World in 16 Days” campaign, utilizing various means of outreach but specificcally social media.
I am currently in love with the social media platform that they have built and are leveraging. They currently have a pretty active Facebook and Twitter page. I encourage you to “Like” them and/or “Follow” them. They might blow your Newsfeed up, but at least its with useful information.
“Orange the World in 16 Days”
The campaigns official color is ORANGE and although I didn’t wear orange today, I plan to find, borrow, and/or buy an orange dress and wear it.
How about you will you join me? Will you spread the word?
