The Kindness of Friends

People always ask me “Who’s your photographer?”, “Who takes your photos everyday?”. I simply reply, “My favorite bun-head, Erica.”

She’s sassy, she’s fierce, has perfectly trimmed bangs,  has the kindest heart, and is loyal to the bone. We share a love of good coffee, sweets, a good salad, getting our fitness on, Broadway shows, and Beyonce ( duh ). She never complains about being my photographer, in fact, I think she enjoys a break away from the monotony of office life.

This day was a particularly warm day in December, so I opted for a short, leggy dress. I thought this was too short for work, Erica just said, “Work those legs guuuurrrl.” I think she approved. Breaking away for 15 minutes from the office, we took a stroll outside to our friendly hipster neighborhood, had some good laughs and took some of my favorite photos of Dressember.

*Thank you for the photos. Thank you Erica for your talent. Thank you for your friendship. Thank you for your love. OKkkkrrr!

Returning to Ballet at 50: Dressember Day 9

“I realized, if not now, when? Or more aptly, if not now, never.”- Yona Zeldis McDonough
These words hold so much truth. Lately, I’ve been struggling with figuring out my next steps. I too often err on the side of caution because I am at ease with the familiar. Yet, I wonder if the path I’m heading down is only providing temporary stability and satisfaction; that I am doing myself a disservice and stiffing the potential and happiness of my life? Is it too safe?
A friend recently told me that “life doesn’t change until you make that decision.” And they are right. I sometimes wish life came with a manual. It’d be so much easier. Until then, I’ll continue to figure it out. One experience/trial/stumble/mistake/ fashion disaster after another, until I can say, “This is where I’m supposed to be.”
Finally, I read this little piece about starting again, wherever you left off. I thought it was touching and well written.

Hackathon: Dressember Day 5

Have you ever heard of a Hackothon?

Yeah me neither until my really good friend who has participated in these weekend long events told me about them. Here’s the official definition:

“A hackathon is a gathering where programmers collaboratively code in an extreme manner over a short period of time. Hackathons are at least a few days – or over a weekend – and generally no longer than a week. While working on a particular project, the idea is for each developer to be have the ability and freedom to work on whatever he/she wants. A hackathon is also known as a hackfest or hack day.”

She is participating in Hack-o-thon LA but there are multiple meetup spots throughout the country. One that caught my attention is from an organization called  CHIME FOR CHANGE, a global campaign to raise funds and awareness for girls’ and women’s empowerment. CHIME FOR CHANGE is founded by Gucci, who has a long history of engagement around women’s and girls’ issues being involved with UNICEF and foundations such as the Kering Corporate Foundation.

CHIME FOR CHANGE is teaming with Twitter and Women Who Code to host a Hackathon to create mobile app solutions to support girls and women around the world, and to celebrate the power of women in tech! They have named this Hackathon #CHIMEHACK (pretty catchy, huh!?)

CHIME FOR CHANGE aims to connect the tech community to issue experts and nonprofits working on the ground to identify ways for disruptive technology to create new linkages and feedback loops that raise funds and awareness to improve Education, Health and Justice for girls and women.

Check out this video about #CHIMEHACK and see who you recognize.

I wish I knew computer programming. The extent of my computer knowledge is “power” button, Microsoft Word, Excel, and INTERNET.

Dressember Day 5 photo shoot was fun. Taking photos with my favorite photographer is half the fun 🙂
